Tour overview

4 days in South Africa safari, Go under the Drakensberg mountains and walk through the Sani Pass on a four-day adventure from Durban to Lesotho. See the Sani To villages and Maseru, as well as the Bushman artwork and the Kome Caves.

Tour itinerary

Day 1:

Leave Durban at 08:00 for the appropriately called settlement of Underberg, located beneath the Drakensberg mountains. We continue into Lesotho in our guided 4wd vehicle from Underberg. Sani Pass route
The Sani Pass rises from 1500m to 2874m above sea level. The iconic switchbacks that overlook the South African lowlands are breathtaking. Hike the escarpment overlooking the Sani Pass or take a pony ride along the rocks.

Day 2:

Ascend further to the 3240m ASL summit of Black Mountain Pass.

The communities in the Sani Top and Mokhotlong regions are among the most isolated in Lesotho. A visit to a village provides an inside look at the people who live in this harsh climate.

Picnic lunch is served overlooking the Senqu River, which flows into the Orange River in South Africa. A vital river for numerous Southern African countries serves as an ideal lunch stop.

The journey from Sani Top to Thaba Bosiu is known as the Roof of Africa route, and we’ve previously climbed the Sani and Black Mountain passes. Following lunch, we tackle Taeeng (3225m) and Motebong (2820m) passes.

3 days in Ethiopia from Gondar, Trek through the Simien Mountains National Park, which is on the UNESCO list. Spend the night in a tented camp to fully experience East Africa. Meet indigenous fauna such as the gelada baboon and the Simien fox.

Day 3:

Breakfast at 7:00 a.m., departure at around 8:00 a.m.
We take a little detour to see signs of prehistoric life forms in a riverbed near our overnight lodging. If the river is in flood, these ancient footprints are concealed from view, but the water levels are generally low enough for us to examine the Dinosaur Footprints.
We now leave the main route to Maseru and head to the Kome Caves, which are currently home to modern cave-dwellers but were once occupied by tribes fleeing the Lifqane battles and cannibalism.

We travel to Thaba Bosiu along back roads that pass through several rural settlements.
Thaba Bosiu is an important cultural center in Lesotho and its history.
We travel from Thaba Bosiu to Maseru for lunch at around 13:00, which provides an excellent perspective of modern-day city life in Lesotho and its interaction with the country’s rich culture.

By 15:00, We head back into the highlands of Lesotho going through the Mantsa Pass to the highland town of Semonkong. Check-in at Semonkong at approx. 17:30

Day 4:

Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m.
Walk or drive to Maletsunyane Waterfall.
Leave the Lesotho highlands through the Qacha’s Nek passes into South Africa. We wind our way through Lesotho’s final isolated communities. We cross the Senqu river, which we initially observed on day one, and then follow it through the Senqu river basins to the border town of Qachas Nek.
When we return to South Africa, we usually eat lunch in Matatiele at about 13:00.
From Matatiele, we follow the Drakensberg mountains down to Underberg via lovely back roads, generally about 15:00-16:00.
