Tour itinerary
Your guide will meet you at your accommodation in Lalibela about 7:30 a.m. to begin your trip. Go towards the picturesque Lasta Mountains from there. You’ll arrive to the Merebarbu Plateau after around three hours. Snack on fruits and kollo, a traditional Ethiopian roasted barley.
Continue your trek to the Ad Medhane Alem plateau, often known as the “narrow pass.” Enjoy the wide vistas of the highlands that stretch out before you. When you eat lunch at the eco lodge, birds of prey such as the Lammergeier and the Augur buzzard swoop overhead.
Following lunch in Atabkit, make your way to Ad Medhane Alem Village to meet your nighttime host family. Visit the hamlet with your family and participate in the ancient Ethiopian coffee ritual. Gather around the fireplace in the evening to unwind before supper.
After breakfast with your host family the next morning, start off on a three to four hour journey to Tigu Kebele. Pass through highland farms, where you’ll witness families at work and children at play. On the fields, cows and sheep graze freely.
As you arrive at Tigu Kebele, go to your overnight lodging, the Abune Yosef Eco Lodge. You’ll climb 40 minutes to a picturesque site at a height of 4,000m for lunch. Enjoy in the breathtaking scenery of the Abune Yosef protected area.
You have two possibilities for spending your afternoon in Tigu Kebele. After lunch, you might choose to climb to the opposite side of the mountains for spectacular views. Continue on to the twin Ziggit summits, and even to the top of Rim Gedel, the highest peak in the Lasta Mountains at 4,284m.
Or, you might opt to join the village’s daily rhythm. Learn how to milk a cow, create the famed Ethiopian Injera bread, harvest crops with the farmers, or visit the local mountain school to get a taste of Highlander culture.
Following your overnight in Tigu Kebele, start the next day with breakfast and a descending journey to Asheten Maryam, a functional monastery. This magnificent edifice is carved into the mountainside and houses monks, nuns, and rare religious relics such as antique crosses and a Bible.
